On the Open Day 2023 we discussed sustainability – a hot and increasingly important topic. Packaging plays a crucial role in our modern society. Every day, we are surrounded by products packaged in various materials, but we rarely stop to consider the environmental impact of these choices. However, in recent years, sustainability in packaging has taken a major role, encouraging the industry to look for innovative solutions to reduce environmental impact.

36% of solid waste within the European Union is made up of packaging (mainly plastic and paper), representing one of the biggest challenges for the environment. To find a solution to this emergency, the European Union has adopted a series of directives that aim to reduce the use of non-recyclable materials and promote the recycling and reuse of packaging, emphasizing the responsibility of companies to reduce their environmental impact and encouraging the use of recyclable and compostable materials.

From the 1st of January 2023, environmental labeling became compulsory also in Italy, a regulation signed by the EU that requires the application of an information label on all packaging to understand its environmental impact and facilitate its collection, reuse, recovery or recycling.

In accordance with the European Green Deal, the European Commission’s Regulation foresees that by 2030 there will be a real revolution in the packaging sector, with the aim of using only recyclable packaging. This forecast underlines the growing importance of sustainability in the sector, significantly decreasing the use of plastic by introducing alternatives, such as aluminum, which are easily recyclable and do not generate waste that is difficult to dispose of.

In the face of this European position, the Bell Holding Group is more than proactive and has demonstrated this with the numerous initiatives and activities it has carried out in recent years.

“The first – reiterated by President Livio Manzini and in line with the 2025 horizon of becoming a zero-impact corporation – is that of the recovery of packaging after use: it should not be seen as mere waste but as a valuable resource. In this perspective, aluminum is an excellent solution because it is infinitely recyclable without losing its initial properties. It is therefore essential that it is disposed of correctly. But many users do not know this or do not realize its importance. That is why, in Turkey, we have set up teams to recover aluminum and plastic packaging that would otherwise be disposed of in the general waste stream: pet bottles, aluminum tubes that are used for coloring by hairdressers, pharmaceutical tubes that are returned to pharmacies, and so on.”

The second goal, horizon 2030, is to halve the group’s CO2 output. “Zero emissions is perhaps an unrealistic goal for the industry, but we can and must get as close as possible”, Manzini says.

The use of recyclable materials helps to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and enables the recovery and reuse of valuable resources. In addition, recyclable packaging reduces the environmental impact of producing new materials, as it requires less energy than the production of virgin raw materials. Bell Holding also demonstrates a profound commitment on this front: it has launched the PAAG project to recover post-consumer plastic debris and channel it into an integrated recycling business.

One of the materials that is increasingly gaining ground in the field of sustainable packaging is the magical aluminum. Tubettificio Perfektüp is proud to favor this material, which is infinitely and completely recyclable (and never loses its initial qualities!) and which offers numerous advantages both environmentally and functionally.

Bell Holding Group not only operates at a European level, but is proud to have signed the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment promoted by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, joining many global stakeholders to reduce plastic waste and pollution worldwide.

The transition to recyclable packaging is not only an ethical choice, but also an opportunity for companies to distinguish themselves in the marketplace. Consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the products they buy and prefer brands that adopt sustainable practices. As a result, companies that adopt recyclable packaging can enjoy a competitive advantage, gaining the trust and loyalty of consumers.
